About Temple Israel/Who We Are

Temple Israel, chartered in 1957, has roots in the Springfield Jewish community dating back to the time of Abraham Lincoln. Over the years, Temple Israel has evolved to reflect the changing needs of Springfield and the surrounding area.  Today, our congregation is a welcoming, inclusive community that draws from various traditions, enabling each individual to be their authentic Jewish self.

We hold weekly Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services.  Our religious services are inclusive and participatory, designed to appeal to a variety of members’ interests.  We also offer diverse services that focus on music and on family and children. We have an active Choir and Sisterhood that lead special events throughout the year. All services are followed by an Oneg or Kiddush, where we enjoy the fellowship of the congregation.

At Temple Israel, we pride ourselves on living the traditional Jewish values of study, Tzedakah, and community engagement. The congregation provides an environment for exploring Judaism through a variety of educational programs, community service opportunities, and joint activities in partnership with the wider interfaith community. Social activities give members a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Our Rabbi and spiritual leader, Arthur Stern brings a new and dynamic style to our Temple. We focus on bringing our multigenerational community closer together, allowing congregants to explore new ways to practice Judaism, and supporting others as they grow in their spiritual and religious beliefs.
