Temple Israel
Rabbi Barry Marks

Welcome to Temple Israel

Temple Israel is a Conservative synagogue located in Springfield, the state capitol of Illinois. We are a warm, sociable congregation with members from diverse professional and religious backgrounds.

A major benefit of the Temple Israel community is our wide range of religious and Jewish programming. For example, our monthly “Musical Shabbat” (first Friday each month) is a special treat and is ideal for families and young adults.  Featuring an acoustic guitar, one of our members co-leads an uplifting musical service. Other Friday night programming highlights include Short Film & Discussion, Israeli Wine Tasting, and “Ask the Rabbi.” We have an Oneg Shabbat after each Friday night service.

During Saturday morning Shabbat services, Rabbi Barry Marks leads a weekly Torah study discussion taught in a casual, interactive format. Services are followed by a Kiddush with bagels and other refreshments, which provides a relaxing atmosphere to socialize with fellow Temple members.

Beyond religious services, there are a range of interesting activities at Temple Israel. These include our annual Hanukah dinner; Purim musicals performed by our choir (Beach Boys music this year); adult education; and an annual membership brunch.  Temple Israel has an active Sisterhood, which runs our well-stocked, convenient Jewish merchandise gift shop, and our kitchen.

Temple Israel provides excellent religious education via the Springfield Board of Jewish Education (sponsored by both Springfield synagogues for combined local Jewish community education).

At Temple Israel, we embrace new members and connect newcomers to families with similar backgrounds to ease the transition into a new city and congregation.  Rabbi Marks and our Temple President are available and happy to meet with and/or talk to prospective members about affiliation and any other questions in confidence. Board members are also available to meet with and/or talk to prospective members.
